Gunmen Kidnap Son Of UNICAL Dean, Attack Others

The son of the Dean of Graduate School of the University of Calabar, Onyebuchi Okwueze, has reportedly been abducted from the staff quarters of the institution by unknown gunmen. Okwueze, a 24-year old first year student of the department of Banking and Finance was abducted on Wednesday. A statement by the Information Officer of the school, Mr Effiong Eyo, made available to The Nation in Calabar read, “Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers yesterday (Wednesday) stormed the premises of the Dean, Professor Emeka Okwueze who was unavailable at the time of the attack, broke into his house and made away with his Plasma television and his 24 year old son who was the only one at home. “The gunmen who were said to have begun their operation at about 8.15pm also inflicted injuries on a lecturer in Physics department, Dr. Anthony George and his wife who were driving in and got caught up in the attack. A 90 year-old retired Soldier, Chief Damian Onwu, 50-year-old pastor, Israel Zacchaeus and their 48-year-old sister, Fubara Zacchaeus were on Friday brought before a chief magistrate court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital for allegedly impersonating their late father to sell portions of their family land. Onwu and the two others were said to have forged the signatures of their dead fathers, who were the elders of Ezekiel Hart family of Grand Bonny Kingdom, in Bonny area of the state. They were to sell the family land located at Kom Kom, in Oyigbo area of the state to unsuspecting members of the public. The accused were charged by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, through the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone six, Calabar in Cross Rivers state. The ex-soldier who retired 30 years ago was charged with conspiracy, forgery, impersonation, extortion and fraud alongside his cohorts. The suspects were granted bail in the sum of N4 m

Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, has noted that car crashes along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway have drastically reduced since the inauguration of the light rail in July, adding that the dense traffic on the highway had also declined to a large extent. He, therefore, reasoned that a functional rail system will reduce road carnages and the attendant loss of lives and property in the country. Oyeyemi said this on Thursday in Abuja at a press briefing on the Sallah special patrol and the commencement of enforcement of speed limiting device in commercial vehicles. Collision of parents of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology and Ogbomoso indigenes have taken to the streets to protest the long shut down of the institution. Placards carrying parents, especially those of Ogbomoso, Oyo State indigenes stormed the Senate building of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology earlier today to pour out grievances over the long closure of the university. They demanded the Oyo State government to take over the university calling for the evacuation of all students from Osun State origin. “Oyo State own LAUTECH, we demand the takeover of the institution, since the Osun State Government has failed it woefully. We are angry over the unnecessary shut down of LAUTECH. We urge the vice chancellor not to sell out Lautech to Osun” one of the protesters said.

As the hardship continues to bite hard on the common Nigerians as a result of the economic recession, some barbers in Abuja, have been nabbed after breaking into a shop and making away with two bags of rice. For allegedly stealing two bags of rice four Abuja-based barbers – Akuranya Matthew, 34; Emmanuel Kalu, 23; Sango Eze, 25; and Orji Ochekawo, 29; – were on Friday, arraigned in a Mararaba Upper Area Court, Nasarawa State. According to a report by Vanguard, the suspects who resides in the Nyanya area of the FCT, were standing trial on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, shop breaking and theft.
